THE BOOK OF PSALMS

The Book of psalms was used in different ways in the early days. The following were some of the ways they could have been read.

1. As prayers

2. For personal devotions

3. As hymns

4. As Scripture texts to be studied diligently

MESSIANIC HOPE

For centuries, the Messianic hope deepened. Each period of difficulty only enhanced and strengthened the hearts of the faithful. Each generation hoped and prayed that the Messiah would come in its lifetime.

MESSIANIC PSALMS

There were some psalms that had Messianic features or elements. How do the texts become Messianic prophecies?

1. The text must have significance that went beyond the immediate context of the psalmist.

2. Only the Messiah can fulfill those Messianic references fully.

3. No psalm is entirely Messianic. In some psalms, Messianic traces may be found.

APPRECIATING THE FULL CONTEXT

The song that the multitudes offered may be traced to Psalm 118.

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD!
We have blessed you from the house of the LORD.”
PSALM 118:26

Zechariah’s prophecy encouraged the production of a spirit of joy and gladness. The song that was sung provided, in a small measure, the content of their greeting of Jesus. They “blessed Jesus” for all that He had done! He had indeed come to Israel in the name of the Lord, and had performed wondrous things.

THE PLAINTIVE CRY FOR HELP

The word “hosanna” simply means “Save now”. And this thought was derived from Psalm 118 too (Cf. Psalm 118:25). Many in the crowd had acknowledged Jesus as their Messiah sent from the Lord.
