Day 263

For David says concerning Him: 'I foresaw the Lord always before my face. "Acts 2:25a"

FLAWED THINKING

Jesus was as forthright! He answered the Sadducees along the following lines.

“Jesus answered and said to them,
‘Are you not therefore mistaken?'”
MARK 12:24A

The Sadducees had assumed that they were working on the correct premises. But what if they were in fact working on the wrong premises all along? Jesus’ next task was to show them where they were wrong.

THE LACK OF FULL BIBLICAL KNOWLEDGE

The lack of full knowledge of the Scriptures created a problem for the Sadducees. Though they prided themselves in their belief in the Law of Moses (The Pentateuch), they obviously had not paid enough attention to its contents.

“Are you not therefore mistaken,
because you do not know the Scriptures
nor the power of God.”
MARK 12:24

Those were serious but true charges! The beliefs (or more accurate, the lack of belief) of the Sadducees were well known to all.

1. You do not know the Scriptures

a) This was a charge that the Sadducees would not want to debate.
b) They would have to debate on the whole of the Scriptures (Law, Prophets, Psalms).
c) Their reasons for not accepting the whole canon of the Scriptures would not be defensible.
d) The Sadducees had to let this statement of Jesus stand.

2. Nor the power of God

a) This second charge flowed from the first statement.
b) What did the Sadducees know about the power of God?
i) Doctrinally (if they so limited the Word of God)
ii) Personally (none had ever performed any miracle)

3. Jesus

He was one who had the highest regard for the Scriptures and He displayed the power of God in His ministry! No one could dispute that!
