PROPHETIC ALLUSIONS

We may speak of prophetic allusions with reference to the betrayal of the Lord Jesus Christ. Two passages may be cited.

Allusion #1

“Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted,
who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.”
PSALM 41:9

a) A familiar friend
Jesus gave His gracious hand of friendship to Judas. He gave to him a special privilege of being one of the Twelve. He was given trust (even though he did not earn it).
b) Ate my bread
Judas partook of the same meals that people gave in honour of the Lord Jesus.
c) Lifted up his heel against me
This is a graphic colloquial expression. He who betrays is described as one who has lifted his heel, his leg against his friend. To betray is to add insult to injury!

Allusion #2

“For it is not an enemy who reproaches me;
Then I could bear it.
Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me;
Then I could hide from him.
But it was you, a man my equal,
My companion and my acquaintance.
We took sweet counsel together,
And walked to the house of God in the throng.”
PSALM 55:12-14

a) Not an enemy
Jesus certainly never regarded Judas as an enemy, at any time.
b) My equal, my companion, my acquaintance
This was the accord that Jesus gave to Judas.
c) Walked to the house of God
Jesus and His disciples walked often to the house of God (synagogues, and the Temple at Jerusalem).
There is a hint of deep sorrow felt in the heart of the person betrayed. Did Jesus feel sad when Judas his one-time disciple and friend plotted to betray Him? Yes!
