Day 313 – Mark 14

“And it shall be that every soul who will not hear that Prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.” Acts 3:23

WHERE WAS PETER?

Peter who had stoutly protested that he would die with Jesus was the one who had cut off the ear of the servant of the high priest. Jesus forbade him to use the sword any further. It would probably have led to the killing of the disciples (Cf. John 18:10-11). Peter then fled with all the other disciples. But plucking up whatever courage he could muster, Peter followed the triumphant soldiers of the Sanhedrin Council.

“But Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard
of the high priest. And he sat with the servants and warmed
Himself at the fire.”
MARK 14:54

ACCUSATIONS HURLED AT PETER

Many were gathered at the residence of the high priest that night. The event of the arrest of Jesus drew many. All wanted to know the outcome of this night’s trial of Jesus.

1. The first accusation

A servant girl belonging to the high priest leveled an accusation against him.

“You also were with Jesus of Nazareth”
MARK 14:67

2. The second accusation

The same servant girl went on to instigate others to accuse Peter.

“This is one of them”
MARK 14:69

3. The third accusation

Then others who had heard these accusations rounded on Peter and said,

“Surely you are one of them; for you are a Galilean,
and your speech shows it.”
MARK 14:70

THE DENIAL OF PETER

Jesus had warned Peter that he would deny Him. These fearful words were fulfilled that same night.

1. The first denial

“I neither know nor understand what you are saying.”
MARK 14:68

2. The second denial

“But he denied it again.”
MARK 14:70

3. The third denial

“Then he began to curse and swear, ‘I do not know this Man
of whom you speak!'”
MARK 14:71

The cock crowed twice at the third denial. Peter now wept. Jesus was right!
