“Who by the mouth of Your servant David have said, ‘Why did the nations rage, and the people plot vain things?” Acts 4:25

LAST WORDS THAT DEFIED MOCKING

The foes of Jesus mocked Him when He uttered a prayer. But really He uttered six other words that they did not, could not mock! What were these words?

1. His prayer for forgiveness for those who crucified Him

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”
LUKE 23:34

How does one mock a Person who had grace enough to pray for His enemies?

2. His concern for His mother

“Woman, behold your son!’

‘Behold, your mother!’
JOHN 19:26-27

Amidst the deepest pain, Jesus expressed love and concern for His beloved earthly mother! How does one despise such filial love displayed?

3. His assurance to the robber who asked for forgiveness

“Assuredly, I say to you,
today, you will be with Me in Paradise”
LUKE 23:43

A moment ago, this robber had railed against Jesus. He repented soon after though. He rebuked his robber-compatriot for continuing to revile Jesus. Humbly, he asked to be remembered by Jesus. The Saviour lovingly assured him of the promise of forgiveness and Paradise! How does one mock such a Person?

4. A cry of thirst

“I thirst” JOHN 19:28

There was nothing to mock here!

5. A prayer of trusting commitment

“Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.”
LUKE 23:46

Another prayer was uttered. It eclipsed the first one! The judgment was over! The relationship with God had been restored! He spoke to Him as “Father” once again! Anything to mock in this quiet, confident prayer?

6. A cry of triumph

“It is finished” JOHN 19:30

There was no mistaking this triumphant cry! No one could mock triumph!
