Day 346 – Mark 16

“Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.” Acts 5:16

TROUBLED THOUGHTS

Everything seemed to have gone wrong that morning! The worst fear was that the enemy had spirited the body of Jesus away somehow. This was desecration. This was a sacrilege! How would they ever find the body of Jesus so that they accord Him the last respects? These and other thoughts must have troubled the minds of the women disciples when they came to the empty tomb of Jesus.

WONDERFUL WORDS OF COMFORT

To their great surprise, the “young man clothed in a long white robe” spoke to them with wonderfully comforting words!

“Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth,
who was crucified, He is risen! He is not here.
See the place where they laid Him.”
MARK 16:6

Every word, every phrase was clearly articulated, so that there would be absolutely no mistaking the meaning of the message! Every word, every phrase was heard with a growing sense of joy by the women disciples!

1. Do not be alarmed (ekthambeo- this word was used exclusively by Mark)

The angel who spoke to the women knew to what extent the women had felt alarmed! The first task was to take away the sense of fear and trepidation felt deep in their hearts.

2. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified.

How did this young man know why they had come to the tomb? His knowledge of their mission increased the confidence of the womenfolk. Yes, they had come to seek the body of Jesus of Nazareth, who was cruelly crucified just three days ago!

3. He is risen!

What did this angel say? Jesus of Nazareth was risen? But of course! This would be the reason why the tomb was empty!

a) Had not Jesus taught this doctrine to all the disciples?
b) Had He not raised Lazarus and others from the dead?
c) Why should He Himself, not be risen from the dead?

4. He is not here, see the place where they laid Him!

Jesus was not there indeed! They had seen the empty tomb with their own eyes. The words of the young man in a white long robe had dispelled all their fears.
