RECEPTION OF THE WORDS OF THE WOMEN DISCIPLES

How did the women disciples fare when they spoke to the men? Let us note what was recorded in the longer version of Mark.

“She went and told those who had been with Him,
as they mourned and wept.
And when they heard that He was alive
and had been seen by her, they did not believe.”
MARK 16:10-11

1. Comparison with the other Gospels

Let us look at the texts from the other Gospels.

“So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy,
and ran to bring His disciples word.”
MATTHEW 28:8

“Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things
to the eleven and to all the rest.
It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James,
and the other women with them, who told these things
to the apostles.
And their words seemed to them like idle tales,
and they did not believe them.”
LUKE 24:9-11

“Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples
that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken
these things to her.”
JOHN 20:18

2. Complementary comments

If we were to study all the Gospels together, we will appreciate just how much they complement each other. There is no contradiction at all, but a great sense of consistency.

a) Fear
This was noted by Mark.
b) Great joy
This was added by Matthew.
c) Resistance
Both Mark and Luke made the same observation. The men disciples rejected the testimony of the women folk
d) Mary Magdalene
In all of the Gospels, Mary Magdalene’s leading role was noted!
