Day 361 – Mark 16

“If this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it- lest you even be found to fight against God.” (Gamaliel) Acts 5:38-39

THE PROMISE OF SPEAKING IN NEW TONGUES

Jesus went on to give another special promise to His disciples!

“…they will speak with new tongues.”
MARK 16:17C

What a wonderful sign this would be! Imagine being able to speak in foreign languages without having to go through the arduous task of learning them in the normal way. It probably was hard for the disciples to understand and appreciate what Jesus really meant.

THE FULFILMENT OF THIS PROMISE

The Book of Acts records very clearly that this special promise of the Lord Jesus was gloriously fulfilled! When the Holy Spirit descended upon the group of 120 disciples, something wonderful happened.

“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak with other tongues,
as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another
‘Look, are not all these who speak Galileans?
And how is it that we hear, each in our own language
in which we were born?'”
ACTS 2:4, 7-8

1. A real spiritual and supernatural gift

Jesus promised His disciples that He would empower and equip them for special ministry (Mark 16:17).

2. Glorious fulfillment at Pentecost

Can the Spirit of God perform such a miracle? But of course! The new languages that the apostles and others found themselves able to utilize include the following ethnic languages/dialects.

“Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those
dwelling in Mesopotamia,
Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and other parts of Libya
adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome…
Cretans and Arabs- we hear them speaking in our own tongues
the wonderful works of God.”
ACTS 2:9-11

3. Modern claims to tongue-speaking

Anyone who claims that he has the gift of tongues would have a hard time proving the true worth of his so-called “gift”. He would have to compare his “gift” with that clearly stated in the Scriptures!
