Day 61 – Mark 3

“Who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy” 1 Peter 2:10b

SILENCE DOES NOT MEAN AGREEMENT

The Pharisees were silenced! They had no answer to the statements of Jesus! However, their silence did not mean that they were in entire agreement with all that Jesus taught!

WATCHING FOR JESUS TO MAKE A MISTAKE

The Pharisees must have decided that they would dog the footsteps of Jesus. They were not there to learn, but to watch and see if Jesus would make a mistake. They would try and catch Him out then.

THE SABBATH ISSUE AGAIN

As was His custom, Jesus would find a synagogue on every Sabbath, and there He would join in the worship service conducted.

“And He entered the synagogue again,
and a man was there who had a withered hand.
So they watched Him closely whether He would heal
him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him.”
MARK 3:1-2

1. Did the Pharisees keep the Sabbath?

a) Did they go to the synagogue for worship?
b) They appeared to have gone there only to find fault with Jesus if they could.

2. What did the Pharisees teach concerning the Sabbath?

a) Did they not teach that the Sabbath was meant for worship?
b) Did they not teach that man should engage in holy activities like the study of the Scriptures?
c) Did they not teach that the heart must be prepared in order to offer acceptable worship?

3. The question of healing on the Sabbath

a) The Pharisees were not entirely against healing on the Sabbath.
b) They reasoned that if a person was in danger of losing his life, he was allowed to seek out a physician.

c) If a person merely had a withered hand, his case was not deemed to be life-threatening and thus he may not seek healing on the Sabbath! Would Jesus heal on the Sabbath?
