Day 77 – Mark 3

“When He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously.” 1 Peter 2:23b

IN DANGER OF BLASPHEMING AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT

The scribes from Jerusalem were treading on very dangerous ground. They were walking on thin ice. They had to be warned that they were in danger of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

“Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men,
and whatever blasphemies they may utter;
but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit
never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation
because they said, ‘He has an unclean spirit.'”
MARK 3:28-30

1. All sins will be forgiven the sons of men

Man will always sin in life. He will commit many sins, again and again. But whatever sins they may be, these can be forgiven. The Scriptures record for us the many types of sin Man has committed against God. If there is true repentance, forgiveness is possible.

2. He who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit

This sin is so serious that we must devote time to study this concept carefully. Let us ponder the following thoughts with fear and trembling.

a) What was this sin that Jesus warned against?
This sin lay in the accusation that Jesus had an unclean spirit. In that the scribes suggested that Jesus was empowered by Beelzebub, they were in fact charging Jesus with the possession of an unclean spirit in Him.
b) The Spirit within Jesus
Mark was most careful to note that it was the Holy Spirit of God who came upon Jesus at His baptism (Cf. Mark 1:10). He was again most diligent in noting that the same Holy Spirit led and empowered Jesus in life and ministry (Cf. Mark 1:12).
To have the scribes from Jerusalem declare that Jesus had an unclean spirit was nothing short of blasphemy! This deadly sin had to be identified and warned against!
c) No forgiveness
This statement was made to highlight the seriousness of this sin! The scribes must not think that they could say all that they want with impunity!
d) Eternal condemnation
How deadly was this sin? Jesus spelt out the penalty that would be meted out against anyone who blasphemed against the Holy Spirit! The blasphemer would be “subject to eternal condemnation”!
