MORE INSTRUCTIONS

Ministry is never “straightforward”. It is never just about preaching and teaching God’s word. There are always many other “elements” that must be taken into consideration.

“Also He said to them,
‘In whatever place you enter a house,
stay there till you depart from that place.'”
MARK 6:10

In order to understand this text better, we need to make reference to what Matthew wrote in his Gospel.

“Now whatever city or town you enter, inquire who
in it is worthy, and stay there till you go out.”
MATTHEW 10:11

1. The matter of housing

Many homes would love to have Jesus stay with them. But what about the Disciples? Would they be able to find as many open homes? The Twelve would have to exercise their faith and more.

2. Inquire who is worthy

When we read Matthew’s text, the Marcan word becomes more easily understandable.

a) Making inquiries
That would be a good and wise thing to do. In any village, people who are godly and righteous would be well known to all.
b) Making contact with “the worthy”

The Disciples would do well to make contact with those who are righteous. If the disciples were to find a truly righteous home, they would be sure that they would also find support for their local ministry. The host would lend whatever support he has at his disposal. A roof over their heads would be welcome assistance.

c) Being good guests

If the Disciples had this level of support from a local family, they must be sure that they prove themselves good guests. A good host must have good guests.
i) They must honour their host by staying with them.
ii) Their presence would result in wonderful blessings from God upon the host family!
