“Moreover I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my decease.” 2 Peter 1:15

LESSONS LEARNED IN MINISTRY (IN TYRE AND SIDON)

We are not told just how much work Jesus did at Tyre and Sidon, but even if all He did was to help the Syro-Phoenician woman, that trip was fruitful and worthwhile. What lessons did Jesus wish to impart to His Disciples?

1. Sharp contrasts

Sharp contrasts may be observed. Two may be highlighted:-

a) The pride of the Jews versus the abject humility shown by the Syro-Phoenician woman.
b) The unbelief of Israel versus the faith of the Syro-Phoenician woman.

2. Heightening awareness of the activities of demons:-

There was a need for the Disciples to know that there was high demonic activity everywhere.

a) Demonic activity in Israel.
b) Demonic activity outside Israel.
c) There was work to be done to defeat the activities of the demons.

3. A glimpse of the work to be attempted in the not-too-distant future:-

a) Jesus’ ministry was largely confined to Israel.
b) His ministry entailed much more than preaching, teaching and healing.
c) His major work was yet to be done; He had come to die for the sins of mankind.
d) However, the Disciples needed to have the following seeds sown in their hearts:-
i) A greater Vision that would embrace more than the nation of Israel.
ii) Greater Compassion that would see them stretch out to both Jews and Gentiles.
iii) A Greater Faith that would stand them in good stead.
iv) Greater Power to battle demons.
v) A Greater Comprehension of the challenges of ministry.
