“The ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error.” 2 Peter 2:18b

ANOTHER REMINDER

Jesus knew that His Disciples found it hard to understand, let alone accept that He had to undergo suffering. He knew that the main reason why they could not accept this teaching about suffering, was because their emotions were deeply involved. Their love for the Lord Jesus precluded any agreement on the subject of His suffering. Nevertheless, He had to remind them again that He would have to fulfill the Scriptures.

“Then they departed from there and passed through Galilee,
and he did not want anyone to know it.
For He taught His disciples and said to them,
‘The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men,
and they will kill Him. And after He is killed,
He will rise the third day.”
MARK 9:30-31

SUBTLE CHANGES IN MINISTRY PLANS

With the teaching of His suffering, Jesus also began to make subtle changes in His itinerary.

1. Passing through Galilee

It may be said that the bulk of Jesus’ ministry took place in Galilee, rather than in the city of Jerusalem. But now He was merely passing through Galilee.

2. Publicity avoided

He did not continue with His usual ministry of preaching to the multitudes, and of healing the sick. These needs were endless!

3. Focus on teaching the Disciples

Jesus saw beyond His immediate ministry. He had to prepare His Disciples to take over where He had left off. But one major obstacle remained. He had to teach them deeply concerning His suffering and death. This would be a major doctrine that the Disciples would have to proclaim in the very near future!

4. Reiteration of the following facts:-

a) Betrayal of Jesus
b) Killing of Jesus
c) Resurrection of Jesus on the third day
These facts must be understood well. There was deep theological significance in all these, albeit personally painful, doctrines. The Disciples had another added difficulty. They did not dare to ask Jesus to explain further (Mark. 9:32).
