Day 218 – Mark 9

“For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water.” 2 Peter 3:5

ADDING TO AN ALREADY FULL CONCEPT

Jesus went on to add yet another profound thought to the imagery of salt.

“Salt is good, but if the salt loses its flavour,
how will you season it?
Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another.”
MARK 9:50

1. Salt- as an external agent

This was the first use of “salt” in Jesus’ imagery.

a) Reference was made to the emblem of salt in the Old Covenant.
b) Salt and Fire were still essentially eternal agents.
i) They are purifying agents.
ii) They are preservation agents.

2. Salt- as an internal agent

Jesus now went on to speak of the Disciples as being “salt”. The Gospel of Matthew sheds this important light.

“You are the salt of the earth;
but if the salt loses its flavour, how shall it be seasoned?
It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out
and trampled underfoot by men.”
MATTHEW 5:13

a) The believer is described as “salt” itself.
b) The emblem of salt must not lose its application.
i) Believers are to function in the capacity of salt in the world.
ii) Believers, like salt must do all God meant it to do.
c) Immediate application of “salt” among the Disciples
i) Jesus knew that their discussion of “greatness” had caused friction among them.
ii) They must preserve the “peace” that they had enjoyed thus far (with salt)
d) The danger of salt losing its flavour
This was possible, and it must not be allowed to happen!
