Text: Micah

MINISTRY OF MICAH

Micah’s ministry in the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah coincided with that of Isaiah (Isaiah 1:1). Hosea also ministered in the reigns of these kings (Hosea 1:1). All of them had significant prophetic ministries. Micah saw and prophesied the destruction of both Israel and Judah! His heart was deeply moved to preach the Lord’s word in the hope that the two kingdoms would repent from their wicked ways.

MENTION OF MICAH

Micah’s ministry was not insignificant. The elders in the land actually cited a message that Micah had preached. They spoke in defense of Jeremiah the prophet at a critical period of his ministry.

“Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah
king of Judah, and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying,
‘Thus says the LORD of hosts:
“Zion shall be plowed like a field,
Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins,
And the mountain of the temple
Like the bare hills of the forest.”‘”
Jeremiah 26:18

MICAH OF MORESHETH

Moresheth Gath (Micah 1:14) was a little town in the Southern Kingdom of Judah. It was not a prominent city but that did not prevent Micah from becoming a significant prophet of the Lord. His task was perhaps even more difficult because he was prophesying the future demise of the two kingdoms when they were enjoying success and affluence!

1. The language of Micah

Micah was a master of using powerful and vivid language. His prophecies are full of rich imagery and symbols.

2. The relevance of Micah’s messages

Micah’s messages were relevant in his time and ours. While we grieve over the problems associated with poverty, we must also note the grave dangers that attend affluence.

3. The problems that Micah addressed

a) Evil and poor leadership.
b) False prophets.
c) Deception that adversely affected the nations.

These problems continue to exist in the world.

4. The Hope that Micah proclaimed

There was a strong note of Hope in Micah’s prophecy and it lay in the coming of the Messiah sent by God! That sense of Hope in the Messiah encouraged Micah to minister mightily (Micah 5:2).

5. A mighty servant of God

Against all the challenges Micah faced, he had this stirring testimony to share,

“But truly I am full of power by the Spirit of the LORD,
And of justice and might,
To declare to Jacob his transgression
And to Israel his sin.”
Micah 3:8

Let us read Micah and be encouraged to seek and to find similar power from the Lord to be faithful in our ministry for the Lord our God!
