Day 2

"Listen, O earth, and all that is in it"

Text: Micah 1:2

A MIGHTY CALL ISSUED

The word of the Lord that was given to Micah was not an insignificant one. The prophet called on all peoples to listen to “the word of the LORD”.

“Hear, all you peoples!
Listen, O earth, and all that is in it!
Let the Lord GOD be a witness against you,
The Lord from His holy temple.”
Micah 1:2

1. A call to the earth

a) Isaiah the prophet wrote in a similar vein (Isaiah 1:2).
b) Isaiah was a contemporary of Micah; Isaiah was the older of the two, having begun his ministry slightly earlier (in the reign of Uzziah; Isaiah 1:1).
c) The possibility of influence was real; but it does not lessen the significance of Micah’s call to the peoples in both lands (Israel and Judah) to listen to his message from the LORD.

2. “Hear, all you peoples! Listen, O earth, and all that is in it”

a) Any word from the Lord deserves utmost attention.
b) The sad reality is that when a land is caught up with idolatrous practices, few are really inclined to listen to the word of the LORD.
c) Nevertheless, the prophet Micah called the peoples to give urgent heed to this message from God.

3. “Let the Lord GOD be a witness against you”

a) The word “witness” suggests the idea of a law suit.
b) Israel and Judah were on trial.
c) The witness called upon was the Lord GOD Himself.
d) He would Himself bear witness against Samaria and Jerusalem.

4. “The Lord from His holy temple”

a) Which “holy temple?”
b) God’s temple:
i) Jerusalem (2 Chronicles 7 carefully recorded how God accepted the temple Solomon built.)
ii) Heaven (Psalm 11:4)
c) A careful study of the contextual history of Judah would suggest that Heaven was the place of God’s “holy temple”.
d) God was speaking from Heaven to His people (both Israel and Judah).
e) Would the people not listen to this urgent word?

This was a call to pay close and careful attention to this solemn word from the Lord GOD!
