"They covet fields and take them by violence"

Text: Micah 2:2

DEEDS OF INIQUITY

Micah noted some of the iniquitous deeds of the wicked in the land of Israel.

“They covet fields and take them by violence,
Also houses, and seize them.
So they oppress a man and his house,
A man and his inheritance.”
Micah 2:2

1. The sin of coveting

a) Coveting was specifically warned against in the Ten Commandments.
b) It is the Tenth Commandment (Exodus 20:17).

2. “They covet”

a) Fields
b) Houses

3. Wherein is the iniquity?

a) The wicked thought much about how they might grab other people’s properties.
b) This is not common theft.

4. “And take them by violence”

a) Fields and houses cannot be stolen easily.
b) “Violence”
i) This was planned and thought through.
ii) The use of force could mean injuring the owners.
iii) The wicked might even kill to get what they covet.

5. “So they oppress a man and his house”

a) In the days of ancient Israel, the Law was supposed to give sufficient protection.
b) The only way to achieve their goals often involved “oppression”.
c) The wicked set about oppressing people with the view of obtaining what they covet.

6. “A man and his inheritance”

a) In the inheritance laws of ancient Israel, the man’s inheritance of “a house, a field etc” is supposed to be strong and secure.
b) The wicked however would think of ways and means (on his bed) to get what he wants.

7. A classic example

King Ahab was a classic example of one who used iniquitous means to obtain the field of Naboth (1 Kings 21).
