Day 26

"If a man should walk in a false spirit"

Text: Micah 2:11

OPPOSING THE PROPHETS OF GOD

All the prophets faced strong opposition from many quarters. Rulers, wicked priests and people in general, did not like to hear strong words of admonition. The prophets had to endure much hardship. They were taunted and dismissed as people who prattled!

A STRONG RESPONSE

Micah was not fazed by the negative comments made by his opponents. He stood up against them strongly.

“If a man should walk in a false spirit
And speak a lie, saying,
‘I will prophesy to you of wine and drink,’
Even he would be the prattler of this people.”
Micah 2:11

1. The taunt against the prophets

a) This was noted in Micah 2:6.
b) Micah was a prophet and so he felt this word of insult personally.

2. What is a prattler?

a) He is dismissed as a person who “babbles”.
b) He is derided by people for speaking that which seemed “nonsensical”.

3. Micah defends himself and the true prophets of God

a) By pointing out who the true prattler was.
b) He bravely stood up for all true and longsuffering prophets of God.

4. “If a man should walk in a false spirit”

a) He does not proclaim the truth.
b) Because he has a false spirit.

5. “And speak a lie”

a) He may claim that he is a prophet.
b) He may also claim that God had spoken to him.
c) But in reality, he speaks a lie. That individual is a prattler.

6. “I will prophesy to you of wine and drink”

a) The speaker is being frivolous.
b) He is obviously mocking the prophets.

7. “Even he would be the prattler of this people”

This saying would fit the very people who spoke against Micah!
