"With the LORD at their head"

Text: Micah 2:13

NOT AN INSIGNIFICANT REMNANT

The Lord would gather scattered Israel back to their homeland at the right time. The following text describes a moving picture of the remnant back in their homeland as their pasture.

“The one who breaks open will come up before them;
They will break out,
Pass through the gate,
And go out by it;
Their king will pass before them,
With the LORD at their head.”
Micah 2:13

1. Sharp observations of a skilled shepherd concerning his flock

a) “The one who breaks open”
i) There will always be a sheep who attempts to “break open”.

ii) It could be a restless ram that seeks to assert itself in the flock.

iii) This is a normal and common thing sheep would do.

b) “Come up before them”
i) These rams would be regarded as a leader.
ii) There would always be sheep who would follow their “sheep-leader”.
c) “They will break out, pass through the gate, and go out by it”
i) The good and wise Shepherd would have seen this kind of activity many times before.
ii) This is no cause for worry for the Shepherd.
iii) Some sheep are more adventurous than others.
iv) The adventurous ones would break out and pass through the gate and go out by it.

2. “Their king”

a) In earlier times the person who led the nation was called “the king”.
b) Times had changed and this title would one day be discontinued.
c) The word “king” in the time when Israel returned would be changed to “governor” (Ezra 5:6).
d) The king will “pass before them”.
i) He would no longer be a proud and aloof king who lived in a palace.
ii) He would humbly find himself among the flock of sheep.
iii) He too would go out to pasture with the flock.

3. “With the LORD at their head”

a) The LORD Himself would play a leading role.
b) As a true and good Shepherd, the LORD would be at the head and leading them to pasture.
