"Her heads judge for a bribe"

Text: Micah 3:11

AN OVERALL ASSESSMENT

Micah did more than just make a general statement of rebuke concerning the leaders. He pointed out the common problems that the leaders were guilty of, both secular and religious.

“Her heads judge for a bribe,
Her priests teach for pay,
And her prophets divine for money.
Yet they lean on the LORD, and say,
‘Is not the LORD among us?
No harm shall come upon us.'”
Micah 3:11

1. “Her heads judge for a bribe”

a) The courts of justice were supposed to uphold the law.
i) The poor need not fear the power of the rich.
ii) Instead the rich and powerful always got away though they broke the law.
b) The judges
i) Bribery was a way of life!
ii) They made more money from bribes!

2. “Her priests teach for pay”

a) King David established a sound system of providing for priests and Levites
(1 Chronicles 23-26).
b) Provision was institutionalized from the days of Moses.
c) The priests were obviously not satisfied with their support.
d) They sought to teach only if people paid them (extra) for their services.

3. “Her prophets divine for money”

a) There was no instruction in the Mosaic Law or in the royal instructions of King David.
b) The prophets were personally raised by the Lord God as and when occasions needed their presence and ministry.
c) The true prophets were not focused on how well they were paid.
d) The false prophets made a lot of money by asking for money for their craft of divination.

4. A common mantra

a) The common mantra was this “Is not the LORD among us? No harm can come upon us.”
b) With this “feel good” message these false prophets deceived the whole nation!
