"And this One shall be peace"

Text: Micah 5:5

FACING HARD REALITY

There would come a time when Judah would face a terrifying and hard reality. This event was recorded in Isaiah 36-37. Micah’s reflection on this event was noted here.

“And this One shall be peace.
When the Assyrian comes into our land,
And when he treads in our palaces,
Then we will raise against him
Seven shepherds and eight princely men.”
Micah 5:5

1. “When the Assyrian comes into our land and when he treads in our palaces”

a) Sennacherib was the king of the Assyrians (Isaiah 36:1).
b) He brought a mighty army into the land (Isaiah 36:1).
c) The representative of King Sennacherib was called the Rabshakeh (Isaiah 36:2).
d) He and his entourage came to meet up with King Hezekiah.

2. “Seven shepherds and eight princely men”

a) These represented the kingdom of Judah.
b) Some of the men were mentioned.
c) Three of them were singled out.
i) Eliakim who was the overseer over the king’s household (Isaiah 36:3).
ii) Shebna, the scribe (Isaiah 36:3).
iii) Joah the recorder (Isaiah 36:3).

3. The Rabshakeh

a) He was an eloquent speaker and he belittled King Hezekiah.
b) He despised the Lord and compared Him with the other idols.
c) He managed to frighten the representatives of King Sennacherib.

4. “And this One shall be peace”

This word would be wonderfully fulfilled. The LORD God would send peace! The heart need not be troubled, no matter how serious the problem may seem to be!

SENDING FOR ISAIAH

King Hezekiah was in despair at this juncture. He did the right things though.

1. He sought the LORD God in prayer (Isaiah 37:1).

2. He sent Eliakim and some elders to see Isaiah and to ask for his counsel (Isaiah 37:2-5).

3. Isaiah’s answer was prompt and powerful. The prophet promised that deliverance would come from the Lord.
