"With what shall I come before the LORD"

Text: Micah 6:6

THE WORSHIP OF GOD

It was the LORD God who gave Israel a system of worship. This is reflected in the text below. However, while the form of worship was understood, the spirit of worship was not fathomed.

“With what shall I come before the LORD,
And bow myself before the High God?
Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings,
With calves a year old?
Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams,
Ten thousand rivers of oil?
Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,
The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?”
Micah 6:6-7

1. The worship of Israel

a) To worship God was an accepted practice.
b) This is to acknowledge Him as the LORD.
c) There ought to be appropriate humility.
d) It would be natural to bow before “the High God”.

2. The offering system

a) There were many types of offerings that may be given (Leviticus 1-7).
b) Burnt offerings was one of the things taught to Israel (Leviticus 6, 9).
Calves which were a year old were offered to God as a suitable offering.

3. Nagging questions of the nation

a) If a calf be accepted as an offering
b) Would thousands of rams be more acceptable to God?
c) Would ten thousand rivers of oil be more pleasing to God?
d) Would the sacrifice of one’s son be more acceptable to God to atone for the sin of the soul?

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF PSALM 50

These questions expressed the misgivings of Israel when they tried to understand what the worship of God was all about. The Psalmist Asaph wrote a significant Psalm that helps us to understand what God is looking for in worship! In Psalm 50, the Lord Himself addressed the nation.

1. He is not looking for physical offerings (Psalm 50:8-13).

2. He is to be worshipped because He is truly the LORD their God (Psalm 50:7).

3. Two things may be highlighted as to what God is looking for from worshippers:

a) To offer to God thanksgiving (Psalm 50:14).
b) To call upon Him in the day of trouble and glorify Him when He delivers (Psalm 50:15).
