"Where is the LORD your God"

Text: Micah 7:10

FACING UP TO BABYLON THE ENEMY

Micah and many of the prophets had been given revelation of Israel’s ultimate enemy. That enemy was none other than Babylon whom God had allowed to destroy Judah as a nation.

“Then she who is my enemy will see,
And shame will cover her who said to me,
‘Where is the LORD your God?’
My eyes will see her;
Now she will be trampled down
Like mud in the streets.”
Micah 7:10

1. “Then she who is my enemy will see”

a) The personal pronoun “she” is a reference to “the enemy”.
b) The enemy that destroyed Judah was Babylon.
c) This understanding was stated in
i) Isaiah 13-14
ii) Jeremiah 50-51
d) Babylon will see the power of the Lord when she is finally destroyed.

2. “And shame will cover her who said to me, ‘Where is the LORD your God?'”

a) The arrogance of Babylon was stark.
b) The height of arrogance is reached:
i) When Babylon derided the name of the LORD.
ii) When Babylon defied the Lord and called Him out.
c) The silence of the LORD:
i) He bore with the insults.
ii) He would also remember the sins of Babylon when Judgment Day comes.
iii) Silence does not mean impotence!

3. “My eyes will see her”

a) This is not necessarily a reference to physical sight.
b) This is rather a reference to the certainty that Micah had in his heart that God would judge and destroy Babylon.

4. “Now she will be trampled down like mud in the streets”

a) Isaiah noted that God would personally deal with Babylon’s arrogance (Isaiah 14).
b) Jeremiah described in terrifying detail how God would destroy Babylon and all who reside there (Jeremiah 51).
