MEDITATION

Exodus 23:9

9 Also you shall not oppress a stranger, for you know the heart of a stranger, because you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE

1. The focus

a. The focus of this law was the future.
b. These instructions would apply when Israel entered the land of Canaan.

2. The immediate context

a. There were “no strangers” in their midst en route to Canaan.
b. All the people were “the children of Israel”.

3. No oppression of strangers

a. This was very possible.
b. They would become the conquerors of the land.
c. There would be people who would like to live among them.
d. These would be called “strangers”.
e. The modern-day word:
i. Foreigners
ii. Immigrants
iii. Possible “citizens”
f. In any case, they must not be oppressed simply because they were not of the stock of Israel.
g. This law was very far-sighted.

4. “For you know the heart of a stranger, because you were strangers in the land of Egypt”

a. Israel’s years of being enslaved by Egypt must never be forgotten.
b. The suffering they endured must make them more understanding.
c. They must never oppress others:
i. Because they had been oppressed.
ii. They must understand the hearts of all who are oppressed.

在生活里有意义地应用

1. 焦点

a. 律法的焦点是未来
b.日后,当以色列进入迦南地时,这些律法都是他们将遵守的

2. 现状

a. 在前往迦南的途中,他们当中并没有“寄居的人”
b. 他们都是“以色列的子民”

3. “不可欺压寄居的”
