INTRODUCTION
PROMISE
The Book of Genesis gives us an important background of the nation of Israel. Its history began with the patriarch Abraham. God promised to give him a land that He would show him (Genesis 12:1-3). This Covenant promise of Canaan was repeated to Isaac and Jacob.
PROPHECY
There was also a somber word of prophecy that God gave to Abraham. His descendants would be “strangers” in a foreign land for four generations.
“Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him.
Then He said to Abram: ‘Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years. And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions. Now as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age. But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.’”
Genesis 15:12-16
THE SOJOURN IN EGYPT
Joseph was a special servant of God who served the Pharaoh of Egypt when a severe famine struck the land. This famine affected the surrounding nations, including Canaan. Jacob and his entire family relocated to Egypt, because Joseph had found favour with the Pharaoh. For as long as Joseph was alive, the family of Jacob was able to flourish and to thrive.
A DRASTIC CHANGE
The word of forewarning given to Abraham materialized when a new Pharaoh came to the throne. He did not recognize the work that Joseph did for Egypt. He only saw how the children of Israel had flourished, and how they were a threat to the security of Egypt. This Pharaoh began to issue harsh laws against the children of Israel. They had become the slaves of Pharaoh and Egypt!
AN IMPORTANT SEQUEL
The Book of Exodus is an important sequel to the Book of Genesis. It continues the story of how God formed the nation of Israel and how He raised up a special servant of God called Moses, to lead the children of Israel into the Promised Land of Canaan. God had every intention to fulfil what He had promised Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
“On the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying:
‘To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates— the Kenites, the Kenezzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.’”
Genesis 15:18-20
