My Song In The Night (Genesis)
Text: Genesis 16: 1-4
MEDITATION
Genesis 16:1-4
1 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar.
2 So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.
3 Then Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan.
4 So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became despised in her eyes.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. God’s promise to Abram was very clear
a. He would have offspring.
b. He would have an heir.
c. There would be countless descendants in time to come.
2. Sarai’s attempt to resolve her problem of being barrena. Abram and Sarai had been childless for many years.
b. She presented Abram with a solution.
3. Sarai’s maid, Hagar would become the second wife of Abram
a. Polygamy was commonplace in those days.
b. It was legal and the offspring would become the heir.
4. Abram complied with this advice presented to him
a. Hagar soon conceived.
b. Sarai did not anticipate the problems that arose.
5. Hagar’s attitude to Sarai changed
a. Hagar was now technically the second wife of Abram, and not just a maid.
b. She was carrying Abram’s heir in her womb.
c. She despised Sarai for being barren all these years.
