MEDITATION
Genesis 24:37-38
37 Now my master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell;
38 but you shall go to my father’s house and to my family, and take a wife for my son.’
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. The oath that Abraham made his servant to swear
a. Isaac must not marry a Canaanite woman.
b. The land was filled with idolaters.
c. They did not share the same faith.
2. Specific instruction
a. With reference to genealogical reference.
i. My father’s house (general reference).
ii. My family (even more specific reference).
b. With reference to spiritual qualities
i. This was not clearly stated.
ii. But the contrast must be noted.
iii. The prospective wife must not be like the women of Canaan.
iv. Hopefully, a suitable bride would be found in Abraham’s family.
3. The special features that the chief steward wanted to see in a prospective wife
(Genesis 24)
a. She must be kind and gracious.
b. She must be strong and hard-working.
4. Rebekah clearly had all the qualities both Abraham and the chief steward desired.
The chief steward believed that God had been leading him all this while!
