Text: Genesis 28: 5-9

MEDITATION

Genesis 28:5-9

5 So Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Padan Aram, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.
6 Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Padan Aram to take himself a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,”
7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and had gone to Padan Aram.
8 Also Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan did not please his father Isaac.
9 So Esau went to Ishmael and took Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife in addition to the wives he had.

MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE

1. Jacob sent away to Padan Aram

Isaac had sent him away to look for a wife in Padan Aram. This was done publicly.

2. Esau’s observations

a. Isaac had blessed Jacob.
b. He had given a strict word to Jacob never to marry a Canaanite woman.
c. Jacob obeyed his father.
d. Isaac had also given him a blessing on his journey to Padan Aram.

3. Esau’s reasoning

a. He knew that his Hittite wives were not pleasing to his parents.
b. But he did not understand fully why they did not like his wives.

4. Esau’s conclusion

a. He must marry again.
b. This time, he married a girl from Ishmael’s lineage.
He thought that his third marriage would win the approval of his parents. He was wrong.

5 以撒打发雅各走了，他就往巴旦亚兰去，到亚兰人彼土利的儿子拉班那里，拉班是雅各、以扫的母舅。
6 以扫见以撒已经给雅各祝福，而且打发他往巴旦亚兰去，在那里娶妻，并见祝福的时候嘱咐他说不要娶迦南的女子为妻，
7 又见雅各听从父母的话往巴旦亚兰去了，
8 以扫就晓得他父亲以撒看不中迦南的女子，

9 便往以实玛利那里去，在他二妻之外又娶了玛哈拉为妻。她是亚伯拉罕儿子以实玛利的女儿，尼拜约的妹子。

在生活里有意义地应用

1. 雅各被打发到巴旦亚兰去

以撒公然地打发雅各往巴旦亚兰去，在那里娶妻

2. 以扫的观察

a. 以撒已经给雅各祝福
b. 以撒严厉警告雅各说不要娶迦南的女子为妻
c. 雅各听从了父亲的话
d. 以撒也祝福了雅各往巴旦亚兰去的路程

3. 以扫的推理

a. 他知道他所娶的那些赫人妻子并不讨他的父母喜爱
b. 但他却无法完全理解父母为何不喜欢这些妻子

4. 以扫的结论

a. 他得再次娶妻
b. 这次，他娶了一个来自以实玛利家族的女子
他以为这第三次的婚姻将能得到父母的认同。他错了。
