Text: Genesis 31: 17-21

MEDITATION

Genesis 31:17-21

17 Then Jacob rose and set his sons and his wives on camels.
18 And he carried away all his livestock and all his possessions which he had gained, his acquired livestock which he had gained in Padan Aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.
19 Now Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel had stolen the household idols that were her father’s.
20 And Jacob stole away, unknown to Laban the Syrian, in that he did not tell him that he intended to flee.
21 So he fled with all that he had. He arose and crossed the river, and headed toward the mountains of Gilead.

MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE

1. Fleeing from Laban

a. Jacob lost no time in organizing his family’s escape.
b. Family came first.
i. His sons were mentioned first.
ii. His wives were mentioned next.
iii. Jacob had possessed camels as part of his acquisition of wealth.
iv. They came in useful at this point of time.
c. Possessions came next.
i. Livestock
ii. Material things (they were called “possessions”)

2. Destination: Canaan, the land of his father

3. Circumstances

a. This was sheep-shearing time.
b. Laban and his sons would be busily occupied.
c. The escape bid was made at a time when Laban least expected it.
d. He certainly did not inform Laban that he was planning to leave.
Speed and stealth would be wise for the journey that would be very difficult

4. Rachel had unwisely stolen her father’s idols as the family fled.
