My Song In The Night (Genesis)
我夜间的歌曲《创世记》
Text: Genesis 35: 5-8
MEDITATION
Genesis 35:5-8
5 And they journeyed, and the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.
6 So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him.
7 And he built an altar there and called the place El Bethel, because there God appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother.
8 Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the terebinth tree. So the name of it was called Allon Bachuth.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. The protection of the LORD
a. The cities around Shechem would have heard about the murders.
b. But they did not pursue Jacob because of the Lord’s mercy and protection.
2. Arriving at Bethel (Luz)
a. This was still in the land of Canaan.
b. The whole family had arrived safely at Bethel.
3. Building of an altar
a. This was erected for the sole purpose of worship.
b. The place was now called “El Bethel”.
The word “El” means “God”. Jacob showed the family how they must worship God.
i. Historical reason
God had appeared to Jacob here originally (Genesis 28).
ii. Current and relevant reason
God had protected Jacob and his family as they made their way to Bethel.
iii. Without the mercy and protection of God, the Hivites and their allies could have easily slain Jacob and his family.
4. The death of Deborah, the nurse of Rebekah
a. She would have been of a great age for she was the nurse who nursed Rebekah.
She was buried with due honour below Bethel!
b. Only one death and Deborah had died peacefully at a ripe old age.
