Text: Genesis 47: 23-26

MEDITATION

Genesis 47:23-26

23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Indeed I have bought you and your land this day for Pharaoh. Look, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land.
24 And it shall come to pass in the harvest that you shall give one-fifth to Pharaoh. Four-fifths shall be your own, as seed for the field and for your food, for those of your households and as food for your little ones.”
25 So they said, “You have saved our lives; let us find favour in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.”
26 And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh should have one-fifth, except for the land of the priests only, which did not become Pharaoh’s.

MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE

1. Joseph’s word to the Egyptians

a. Pharaoh now owned the land of Egypt.
b. This was agreed upon by the Egyptians.

2. Post-Famine plans

a. The famine would be over soon.
b. It was time for sowing seeds.
c. Seeds would be given.
d. The people may return to their farmlands,
e. At harvest, the famers must give to Pharaoh twenty percent of their harvest.
f. They may keep eighty percent of their harvest for their families.

3. Full agreement from the Egyptians

a. They were grateful that they were saved from starvation.
b. They promised to become loyal subjects (servants) of the Pharaoh.
c. They would be happy to give to Pharaoh twenty percent of their harvest.

4. The Egyptian priests

They were exempted from this arrangement. They were given special royal privileges.

26于是约瑟为埃及地定下常例，直到今日，法老必得五分之一，唯独祭司的地不归法老。

1. 约瑟对埃及人说的话

a. 饥荒快要结束
