THE PARABLE OF A FRIEND WHO CAME AT MIDNIGHT
1. Praying well can be learned.
a. We need to know what to pray about.
b. We need to practice praying much more.
2. Encouragement to Pray.
a. The Lord Jesus sought to encourage His Disciples to pray.
b. He spoke to them using a Parable.
3. A short story about True Friendship.
a. There were Two Good Friends.
b. There was another Friend who had come to visit.
c. The problem was that there was nothing to give to the Visiting-Friend to eat.
i. It was customary to offer refreshments to a visitor.
ii. Especially when the Visitor has come from a long journey.
d. The Host-Friend
i. He went to his Good Friend.
ii. He explained his circumstances to his Good Friend.
e. The Sleeping Friend’s initial response:
“And he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not
trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children
are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’?
I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him
because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence
he will rise and give him as many as he needs.”Luke 11:7-8
i. “Do not trouble me”
ii. “The door is now shut”
iii. “My children are with me in bed”
iv. “I cannot rise and give to you”
f. Did he finally rise up to give the bread requested?
i. Yes!
ii. If friendship does not prevail.
iii. Persistence will win the day (Luke 11:8).
WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THIS PARABLE?
1. The Lord Jesus was teaching His Disciples to persevere in prayer.
2. Many expect instant answers to prayers.
a. But there may not be instant answers.
b. What is needed is be persistent in our prayer efforts.
i. Persistence in learning.
ii. Persistence in practising prayer.
iii. Persistence when the Lord does not answer prayers swiftly.
