Text: Luke 11: 33-36

THE IMAGERY OF LIGHT

1. Light is a significant symbol.

2. The Lord Jesus used the Household Lamp as an example of Light.

THE PROPER USE OF THE HOUSEHOLD LAMP

1. It is not placed in a secret place (Luke 11:33a).

2. It is not put under a basket (Luke 11:33b).

3. It is put on a lampstand in the house (Luke 11:33c).

4. It benefits all in the house (Luke 11:33d).

THE LAMP OF THE BODY

1. The symbol of the Lamp is extended to the body (Luke 11:34a).

2. The eye is thought of as the Lamp (Luke 11:34b).

3. If the eye is good:

a. The Lamp is lit.

b. It is placed in the proper place.

c. The whole body is full of light (Luke 11:34c).

4. If the eye is bad:

a. There is no light given.

b. The whole body is full of darkness (Luke 11:34d).

IMPORTANT ADMONITION

1. The Light that one uses may not be the true light.

2. It is mistaken light.

3. It is in fact darkness (Luke 11:35).

a. This described the detractors of the Lord Jesus.

b. They think they have the light.

i. They criticize.

ii. They condem

iii. They are in darkness!

4. Important recapitulation

a. If the body is full of light, there is no darkness at all (Luke 11:36a).

b. (Then) the whole body will (indeed. be full of light (Luke 11:36b).

c. It is like a bright shining lamp giving (good and clear) light (Luke 11:36c).
