My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 12: 1
A HUGE CROWD
1. The Lord Jesus was greatly popular for many reasons:
a. He had power to heal any sickness.
b. He could cast out any number of demons.
c. He was a great Teacher.
d. He brought great encouragement to many hearts.
e. He pointed people to relate to God in faith.
f. He helped people to find salvation through His Gospel.
2. He was also popular for a secondary thing.
a. He was not afraid of the scribes and Pharisees.
b. He stood up against them.
c. He even dared to rebuke them publicly for their hypocritical ways.
3. On one occasion:
a. “An innumerable multitude of people had gathered together” (Luke 12:1a).
b. “So that they trampled one another” (Luke 12:1b).
c. Of course, this problem was sorted out so that no one was injured unnecessarily.
THE DEEP PROBLEM OF HYPOCRISY
1. The Lord Jesus had two groups of people to minister to:
a. The multitudes (Luke 12:1a)
b. The Disciples (Luke 12:1b)
i. The Disciples may have been alarmed that the Lord spoke so openly.
ii. They knew that the scribes and Pharisees would retaliate somehow.
iii. There may be some fear in their hearts!
2. Hypocrisy was a sin problem the Lord Jesus had highlighted.
a. The Lord Jesus dealt with the subject of hypocrisy (Luke 12:1c).
b. In plain language, He said to His disciples:
“Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy.”
Luke 12:1d
i. The scribes and Pharisees (Luke 11:44)
ii. Among the lawyers (Luke 11:46, 52)
3. What is the sin of hypocrisy?
The following are some nuances to take note of:
a. The sin of Pretence.
b. The sin of Deceit.
c. The sin of Veiled Pride.
d. The sin of stubborn refusal to repent.
iii.
