My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 12: 16-21
THE LORD JESUS AS A TEACHER
1. The Lord Jesus was a Master-Teacher.
2. He could turn any situation into an effective teaching point.
3. He was a master at creating and telling Parables.
THE PARABLE OF THE RICH FOOL
“Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: ‘The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.’’’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose
will those things be which you have provided?’ ‘So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.’”Luke 12:16-21
1. This Parable cleverly described those who were rich in those days.
2. The Rich Man in the Parable.
a. He was already rich.
b. His crops had done very well.
c. His plan:
i. To increase wealth.
ii. To make plans for further growth in his wealth.
d. His thoughts:
i. He is pleased with himself.
ii. His philosophy of life: “Take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.”
e. Huge flaws:
i. He had no thoughts about God.
ii. He had not thought about Death.
3. God comes into the picture
“Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?”
Luke 12:20
a. What happens when one dies?
b. All the provisions made in life will come to nothing!
c. The rich man was rightly called “Fool!”
4. The point of this Parable.
“So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God”
Luke 12:21
a. True wealth is not in material riches.
b. Laying up treasures on earth for self at the expense of knowing God is truly foolish.
