My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 14: 28-33
TOWARDS SUCCESSFUL DISCIPLESHIP
1. Is it possible to be a faithful and successful Disciple? The answer is “Yes!”
2. The Lord Jesus explained how this may be achieved!
“For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it— lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’? Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.”
Luke 14: 28-33
a. Count the Cost.
i. This is a key idea.
ii. The more we understand the “cost factor” the more likely to succeed.
b. The fact is that many have not counted the cost of following the Lord Jesus.
3. Relevant Illustrations
a. A person building a tower:
i. It is normal to count the cost of building a tower.
ii. The builder must know he can afford to do this.
iii. If he only lays the foundation and then stops he will be mocked by people.
iv. He would be known as “a starter but not a finisher”.
b. A king going to war:
i. He must know the strength of his army.
ii. He must also consider the strength of the enemy.
iii. If he miscalculates, he would be heading towards defeat and disaster.
iv. It would be wiser to pursue for peace than to enter into a war and be defeated.
4. The cost of Discipleship
a. It takes “forsaking all” to truly succeed.
b. Anyone who is not prepared to make sacrifices to follow the Lord Jesus will not become a successful and faithful disciple.
5. Counting the Cost
a. Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is worth everything we can put in.
b. Following the Lord must see us dare to make any sacrifice for the Lord.
Let us count the Cost of Discipleship and let us walk with the Lord faithfully!
iii.
iii.
