MIXED RESPONSE

1. There were those who liked what the Lord Jesus taught.

a. They knew what He said was true.
b. They could see that He lived what He preached.

2. There were also those who did not like what the Lord Jesus taught.

a. A group of them was identified.
b. This group of people had resisted and rejected many things the Lord taught.

STRONG RESISTANCE

“Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they derided Him. And He said to them, ‘You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.’”

Luke 16:14-15

1. The Pharisees

a. They prided themselves as “righteous people”.
b. They saw themselves as the custodians of the Jewish faith.

2. Lovers of money

a. This was clearly stated.
b. This was obvious by the way they lived.

3. Resistance

a. They heard what the Lord had taught:
i. In a parable.
ii. In His explanations (Luke 16:1-13).
b. They derided Him.
i. They mocked the Lord.
ii. They ridiculed Him.
iii. They obviously rejected what the Lord had stood for.

THE RESPONSE OF THE LORD JESUS

1. They justified themselves.

“You are those who justify yourselves before men”

Luke 16:15a

a. The word “justify” is to declare a person righteous.
b. They declared themselves righteous though they loved money.
c. This was simply “justification before men”.

2. “But God knows your hearts”

a. Were they justified or declared righteous before God?
b. The answer was obvious! They were not righteous before God!
c. God knew their hearts, obviously!

3. “For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.”

a. There are things that are highly esteemed among men:
i. Wealth
ii. Fame
iii. Power
b. But these things may be an abomination in the sight of God:
i. If people end up serving unrighteous mammon.
ii. If people abuse the privileges and authority given to them.
