My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 17: 1-2
OFFENSES IN LIFE
The word “offense” means “a stumbling block”. These may be divided into two groups.
1. Non-deliberate stumbling blocks.
2. Deliberate stumbling blocks.
The Lord Jesus gave a strong warning against the latter group!
“Then He said to the disciples, ‘It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.’”
Luke 17:1-2
1. “Then He said to the disciples”
a. This word was directed to His Disciples.
b. They must take careful heed of the danger He was going to highlight.
2. “It is impossible that no offenses should come”
a. It is impossible to not see offenses occur.
b. Somehow, someone would take offense.
c. But this may be called:
i. Unwitting offense.
ii. Non-intentional offense.
iii. Non-deliberate offense.
3. “But woe to him through whom they do come”
a. The Lord was now speaking of the person who caused the offense.
b. This offense was a deliberate one.
i. It was intentional.
ii. This was pre-meditated.
iii. It was deliberate.
4. The Penalty would be very severe.
It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.
a. The Penalty was not described in detail.
b. The comparison
i. Better if he had been thrown into the sea with a millstone round his neck.
ii. Than to offend “little ones”.
iii.
iii.
b. 对比
