Text: Luke 17: 31-33

WISE PRACTICAL RESPONSE

1. The Second Coming doctrine

a. This had to be carefully taught.
i. To be well-informed is important.
ii. To get all the details right is just as vital.
b. There were problems with understanding this teaching.
i. There was ignorance.
ii. There was misunderstanding about the Lord Jesus and the Kingdom of God.

2. The next thing that needed to be taught:

a. To have a wise practical response.
b. To have a poor response would not be meaningful.

3. The appropriate response

“In that day, he who is on the housetop, and his goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back. Remember Lot’s wife. Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.”

Luke 17:31-33

a. The focus is “not to turn back”.
b. The example of Lot’s wife was cited.
i. Lot, his wife and 2 daughters were told to flee Sodom.
ii. The angels of the Lord were sent to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah.
iii. Lot’s wife was reluctant to leave Sodom.
iv. She turned back to return to her city and was turned into a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:1-29).
c. There would be physical battles when the Lord Jesus returns.
d. The wisest course of action.
i. Don’t focus on earthly things.
ii. Focus on the joy of seeing the Lord Jesus returning.
iii. Don’t look back to the worldly and sinful past!
e. An important paradox to keep in mind.

“Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.”

Luke 17:33

i. Let us not try and save our life.
We cannot save ourselves. Let us trust the Lord to save us!
ii. Let us not be afraid to lose our life for the sake of the Lord Jesus.
We will see our life preserved!
