Text: Luke 18: 9-14

TRUST IN SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS

1. There were some who trusted in self-righteousness.

2. The Pharisees were one of these people.

3. The Lord Jesus had to address this problem.

4. Once again, He taught by using a very well-crafted Parable.

THE PARABLE OF THE PHARISEE AND THE TAX COLLECTOR

“Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: ‘Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.’”

1. The features of this Parable

a. Two men were featured.

i. One was a Pharisee.

ii. The other was a Tax Collector.

b. Both men went to the Temple to pray.

c. The Prayer of the Pharisee.

i. He took pride that he was not like others.

ii. He was consciously listing the sinful people he obviously despised.

iii. He fasted twice a week.

iv. He gave a tithe of all he possessed.

d. The Prayer of the Tax Collector.

i. He felt very sinful.

ii. He did not dare to lift up his eyes to heaven.

iii. He pleaded for mercy.

iv. He beat his breast for being so sinful.

2. The Assessment of the Lord Jesus concerning the two men.

a. The Tax Collector was “justified” rather than the Pharisee.

i. To be justified means that God had forgiven him.

ii. He is given righteousness by God for he pleaded for mercy.

b. Important lessons to learn:

i. True righteousness is given by God.

ii. It comes from justification by the Lord and given to the sinner who humbly confesses his sins.

iii. Humility is what is needed.

iv. The self-righteous person is not righteous in the sight of God.

b. 重要的教训：

i. 真正的公义是上帝所赐的

ii. 它来自上帝的称义，它赐给谦卑认罪的罪人

iii. 谦卑是我们所需要的

iv. 自以为是的人在上帝眼中不是义人
