Text: Luke 18: 18-23

THE DESIRE TO BE WEALTHY

1. This desire for riches:

a. It is very strong.

b. It affects many people.

2. Some acquire wealth.

a. It is not impossible to acquire wealth.

b. But wealth can affect a person adversely.

THE WEALTHY AND THE KINGDOM OF GOD

1. An incident of a rich man coming to the Lord Jesus was recounted.

2. This was not a Parable!

“Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, ‘Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ So Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Honour your father and your mother.’’And he said, ‘All these things I have kept from my youth.’So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, ‘You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.’
But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.”

Luke 18:18-23

3. A Ruler of the Jews.

a. He was one of the religious rulers in Israel in the days of the Lord Jesus.

b. He was described as “very rich”.

4. He came to the Lord Jesus to discuss how a person may obtain eternal life.

“Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

Luke 18:18

a. Politely, he addressed the Lord Jesus. “Good Teacher”.

b. He asked how he could obtain eternal life.
This was a good and valid question.

5. The Lord Jesus began a conversation with him.

a. A short discussion about Goodness.

“Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.”

Luke 18:19

i. This does not mean that the Lord Jesus is not good?

ii. The Lord Jesus knew his heart.

iii. He acknowledged that the Lord Jesus was indeed good.

iv. But he implied that he was good too (not stated).

b. “No one is good but One, that is, God”

i. God is Good in the absolute sense.

ii. The Rich Ruler did not recognize the Lord Jesus as “God”.

6. A discussion about the Commandments of God.

“You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Honour your father and your mother.’”

Luke 18:19

a. The Lord Jesus cited some of the laws of God.

b. How did the Rich Ruler understand these laws?

7. The Rich Ruler replied honestly that he had kept God’s commandments carefully
From his youth!

8. The Challenge of the Lord Jesus.

“So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, ‘You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.’ But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.”

Luke 18:22-23

a. The Lord Jesus asked him to consider this challenge:

i. To give up all his riches.

ii. To give away all his wealth to the poor.

b. Treasure in heaven

He would have treasure in heaven.

c. Invitation to follow the Lord Jesus.

This Invitation was given to the Rich Ruler.

9. The Response of the Rich Ruler

a. He heard what the Lord Jesus said.

b. But he could not give up his great wealth.

c. With great sorrow, he walked away from the Lord Jesus Christ.

i. His quest for eternal life.

He did not pursue this now.

ii. Treasures in heaven.

It would appear that he preferred earthly treasures.

3. 犹太人的领袖

a. 他是在主耶稣时代其中一个以色列的领袖

b. 他被形容为“很富足”

4. 他到主耶稣面前和祂讨论如何承受永生

“良善的夫子，我该做什么事才可以承受永生？”

a. 他很有礼貌地称主耶稣为“良善的夫子“

b. 他询问如何可以承受永生

这是一个必须思考，很好的问题

5. 主耶稣开始与他交谈

a. 关于良善的简短讨论

“你为什么称我是良善的？除了神一位之外，再没有良善的。”

《路加福音 18：19》

i. 这并不表示主耶稣不良善

ii. 主耶稣了解这人的心

iii. 他承认主耶稣是的确良善的

iv. 但他也暗示着自己也良善（未说明）

b. “除了神一位之外，再没有良善的”

i. 唯有上帝是良善的

ii. 有财富的领袖并没有认主耶稣为“上帝”

6. 关于上帝诫命的讨论

“诫命你是晓得的：不可奸淫，不可杀人，不可偷盗，不可作假见证，当孝敬父母。”

a. 主耶稣列下了上帝的律法

b. 这有财富的领袖如何理解这些律法？

7. 他回答说自己从小就遵守上帝的律法！

8. 主耶稣的挑战

“耶稣听见了，就说：‘你还缺少一件：要变卖你一切所有的，分给穷人，就必有财宝在天上；你还要来跟从我。’ 他听见这话，就甚忧愁，因为他很富足。”

a. 主耶稣要他试想这个挑战：

i. 放弃他所有的财富

ii. 变卖一切所有的，分给穷人

b. 财宝在天上

他就必有财宝在天上

c. 邀请他跟随主耶稣

这是给予这有财富的领袖的邀请

9. 有财富的领袖的回应

a. 他听见了主耶稣所说的

b. 但他却不肯放弃财富

c. 他甚忧愁，从主耶稣身边离开了

i. 他对永生的追求

他不再追究了

ii. 财宝在天上

他更爱世上的财宝
