Text: Luke 20: 27-33
THE SADDUCEES
1. Some facts about the Sadducees will help us understand the following text better.
2. The Sadducees were politically inclined.
a. They were more of a political group.
b. They worked closely with Rome.
c. They controlled the Temple trade.
d. They were the so-called “upper class”.
e. They were rich and powerful.
f. They were the majority in the Sanhedrin Council.
3. What the Sadducees did not believe.
a. They accepted only the first five books of Moses.
b. They rejected all the other books of the Scriptures.
c. They did not believe in angels or demons.
d. They did not believe in the hereafter.
THE PARABLE OF THE SADDUCEES
“Then some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, saying: ‘Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and died without children. And the second took her as wife, and he died childless. Then the third took her, and in like manner the seven also; and they left no children, and died. Last of all the woman died also. Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had her as wife.’”

1. The Sadducees deny that there is any resurrection Luke 20:27.
2. The old practice of a Levirate Marriage.
a. A man gets married.
b. If he dies without an heir.
c. His brother is supposed to marry the deceased brother’s widow (Latin… Levir, meaning husband’s brother).
d. If there is an offspring, it would be considered the child of the deceased brother.
e. There were legal means when this practice may be declined.
3. The story of the Sadducees.
a. A man marries and dies.
b. Seven brothers marry the same widow.
c. In the end, all die.
4. The question raised by the Sadducees.
a. If there is a Resurrection.
b. Whose wife would she be?
c. She has had seven husbands!
