Text: Luke 21: 12-13
A HOSTILE WORLD
1. In a hostile world, we must expect great challenges.
2. The Lord Jesus warned that the believer may even be persecuted.
A WORD OF WARNING
“But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and rulers for My name’s sake. But it will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony.”
Luke 21:12-13
1. The wicked persecution of believers.
a. “They will lay their hands on you and persecute you”
i. Believers may be arrested.
ii. The laws of the State may be utilised to persecute believers.
b. In the New Testament period (In the first century).
i. Believers were delivered up to the synagogue leaders.
ii. They were sometimes sent to prison too.
2. “Brought before kings and rulers”
a. The Apostle Paul had these experiences.
b. He had to defend his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
i. Before Roman governors (Acts 25).
ii. Before King Herod Agrippa (Acts 26).
iii. He was sent to appear before the Emperor of Rome (Acts 27-28).
3. For the sake of the Lord’s name.
a. The believers will not be persecuted for wrongdoing.
b. They will be persecuted for believing in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
4. An occasion for testimony.
a. This was the way the Apostles bore their suffering.
b. They were not afraid of any persecution.
c. They used every opportunity to bear witness of their faith in the Lord Jesus.
