Text: Luke 21: 23-24
JERUSALEM MADE DESOLATE
“But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.”
Luke 21:23-24
1. These were solemn words of warning given by the Lord Jesus Christ.
2. How could He have uttered these words?
a. The Lord Jesus had a number of ministries:
i. He was a Teacher.
ii. He was a Healer.
iii. He was the Messiah.
iv. He was a Priest after the Order of Melchizedek.
v. He was also the promised Son of David (He was destined to be King).
vi. He was also a Prophet.
b. This was a prophecy.
i. This word was revealed to Him by God.
ii. It was faithfully revealed to the multitudes/ Disciples.
3. General distress:
a. To the land.
b. To the people in the land.
4. Great distress in particular:
a. To those who were pregnant.
b. To those who were nursing babies.
5. The Romans
a. Many would be slain by the sword.
b. Many others would be captured and sold as slaves to other nations.
c. Jerusalem would be trampled by the Gentiles.
d. Jerusalem and the Temple was razed to the ground in AD 70.
6. Until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
a. Israel did not have a land to call their own until 1948.
b. The times of the Gentiles have been fulfilled.
