My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 22: 7-13
PREPARATION FOR THE PASSOVER I
1. Passover traditions
a. These were largely kept.
i. Leaven was removed from the house.
ii. The Passover Meal is carefully prepared, including the eating of a lamb.
b. The Jews were on the look-out for the whereabouts of the Lord Jesus.
i. It would not be wise to celebrate this with Lazarus and family.
ii. A secret location had already been planned.
2. The Day of the Passover had now come.
“Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be killed. And He sent Peter and John, saying, ‘Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.’ So they said to Him, ‘Where do You want us to prepare?’ And He said to them, ‘Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, ‘Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’ ‘Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.’ So they went and found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.”
Luke 22:7-13
a. The Day of Unleavened Bread.
i. This was an idiomatic expression.
ii. This was the Passover Feast.
iii. It was followed by a Week-long celebration called the Unleavened Bread Feast.
b. When the Passover must be killed.
i. This is a reference to the Passover Lamb.
ii. The word “Lamb” was understood, thus it was not even mentioned.
iii. This is another example of the use of idiomatic (colloquial) language.
c. The Passover was explained carefully in Exodus 12.
i. It commemorated the time when God passed over Egypt.
ii. The firstborn sons of the Egyptians were slain.
iii. The firstborn sons of Israel were spared.
