My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 22: 24-27
DISPUTE ABOUT GREATNESS
1. The word about betrayal caused a stir among the disciples.
2. But that was soon eclipsed by another thought.
The Disciples were disputing among themselves as to who was the greatest among them.
“Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. And He said to them, ‘The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ But not so among you; on the contrary, he who
is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves.’”Luke 22:24-27
THE OCCASION OF THE DISPUTE
1. This took place at the celebration of the Passover.
2. The Lord Jesus had also instituted The Lord’s Supper.
3. He had just warned them about His betrayal by one of them!
4. Yet, this dispute about personal greatness arose!
a. This was unbecoming.
b. It was uncalled for.
c. It was carnal!
THE RESPONSE OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST
1. He continued to be:
a. Gracious
b. Understanding
2. He gave a vital word of teaching concerning the subject of “greatness”.
a. The Gentiles
i. The Gentile kings are concerned about greatness.
ii. Those who have authority take pains to ensure they are well-regarded as “benefactors”.
b. The Disciples of the Lord Jesus
i. They must be different from the Gentile lords.
ii. Those who are great must serve humbly, as a younger person would give respect to those who are older.
iii. Those who govern others, must focus on being humble servants.
c. The Example of the Lord Jesus Christ
i. He who sits at the table is considered greater than he who serves.
ii. But the Lord Jesus was among them as One who serves.
iii. His example must cause them to emulate Him.
iv. They must aspire to be humble servants rather than be great lords!
iii.
iii.
