My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 22: 39-40
THE PRACTICE OF PRAYING
1. The Lord Jesus was “accustomed” to praying.
2. He had practised praying all His life.
a. As a child He learned how to pray.
b. Personally, He prayed often, for this was so natural.
c. His close relationship with God as Father drew Him to pray meaningfully.
PRAYING IN THE GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE I
1. After the Passover Meal, the Lord Jesus went up the Mount of Olives.
2. This would be a special season of prayer.
“Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him.”
Luke 22:39
a. As He was accustomed.
i. Prayer was a natural thing to do.
ii. He would seek God His Father in prayer in the Mount of Olives.
b. His Disciples.
i. They were loyal and faithful.
ii. They followed Him.
3. A word of advice to the Disciples.
“When He came to the place, He said to them, ‘Pray that you may not enter into temptation.’”
Luke 22:40
a. The Lord Jesus had come to the usual place for His special time of prayer.
b. He had a word of advice to give to His Disciples.
c. He urged them to pray.
d. He knew of an area of weakness among His Disciples.
i. They were not very strong.
ii. They were not very prayerful either (though they had been taught).
e. That you may not enter into temptation.
i. Perhaps, God may spare them.
ii. Perhaps, they would be encouraged to deepen their prayer life.
