My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 22: 45-46
A SHARP CONTRAST
1. The Lord Jesus sought God the Father in earnest prayer.
a. His sorrow drew Him to pray even more earnestly.
b. His prayer life was strong and sound.
2. The Disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.
a. The Lord Jesus did not ask all the Disciples to watch with Him.
b. He chose only three Disciples for this (Peter, James and John).
c. But they could not stay awake, watching in prayer.
A CANDID DESCRIPTION GIVEN
“When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. Then He said to them, ‘Why do you sleep? Rise and
pray, lest you enter into temptation.’”Luke 22:45-46
1. The Lord Jesus had come to an end of His prayer session.
a. He had accepted His Father’s Will.
b. He will drink the cup that His Father had given Him.
c. It would be a very bitter cup to drink indeed.
2. He came to His Disciples.
a. They were sleeping soundly.
b. They had felt the sorrow of the Lord Jesus.
c. But they could not watch in prayer though they had tried.
ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM
1. “Why do you sleep?”
a. The Lord Jesus sought to encourage them despite their failure.
b. He urged them not to yield to the weakness of the flesh.
2. “Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.”
a. The challenge was to rise up.
i. It would take some effort to arise and pray.
ii. But the effort would be worth it.
b. The temptation
i. The word “temptation” may also be called “testing”.
ii. The test of their faith and strength would come.
3. The Testing of the Disciples.
a. They had all declared that they would be with the Lord faithfully.
b. The testing would come shortly.
c. How would they fare if they were to be tested severely?
d. Without praying earnestly, would they find the needed strength to face the test?
