My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 23: 23-25
THE TUSSLE BETWEEN PILATE AND THE COUNCIL MEMBERS
1. Pilate could have used his authority and power to release the Lord Jesus.
a. He had found no fault in Him.
b. He had not broken any laws.
c. He had not done any evil.
2. Instead, he chose to negotiate with the accusers.
a. He offered to chastise the Lord Jesus.
b. And then, release Him for He had done nothing worthy of condemnation.
3. He had reckoned wrongly.
a. There was no negotiation with these wicked people.
b. They insisted that he must bend to their demands!
THE DECISION OF PONTIUS PILATE
“But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed. So Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested. And he released to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.”
Luke 23:23-25
1. The Sanhedrin Council Members.
a. They were insistent.
b. They made their demands with loud voices.
c. They demanded that the Lord Jesus be crucified.
d. Their voices prevailed!
2. The fateful decision of Pontius Pilate.
a. He released Barabbas to them.
i. He had been a rebel.
ii. He had also murdered. But he would now be pardoned.
b. He delivered the Lord Jesus to their will.
i. The Lord Jesus would be condemned by Rome.
ii. He would suffer crucifixion. This was truly a great irony.
