My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 23: 34-35
A PRAYER OF THE LORD JESUS ON THE CROSS
1. If we were to suffer terrible pain, would we be able to pray for others?
2. The Lord Jesus Christ prayed for others even when He was suffering terribly!
“Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.’ And they divided His garments and cast lots. And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, ‘He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.’
Luke 23:34-35
a. A prayer for forgiveness.
i. This was an amazing thing to do.
ii. The heart of grace and love of the Lord Jesus was clearly evidenced!
b. This prayer was spoken.
i. From the heart of a Son to God as Father.
ii. This is an incredible expression of trust on the part of the Lord Jesus.
3. Hard-to-forgive things at the foot of the Cross of Calvary!
a. The soldiers were dividing the garments of the Lord Jesus.
i. It was customary for the soldiers to be given the clothes of the prisoners.
ii. The garments of the Lord were good ones and the soldiers did not want to tear them.
iii. They decided that they would cast lots for them.
b. There were on-lookers.
i. Some of them were religious leaders.
ii. They sneered at the Lord Jesus.
c. They mocked the Lord Jesus cruelly.
i. The Lord had saved many from demons.
ii. He had healed many too.
iii. But He appeared to be helpless now.
iv. They mocked the Lord Jesus as the Christ.
v. They mocked Him for thinking He was the chosen one.
4. Yet, though so many wicked things had been done against the Lord Jesus, He prayed that they might be forgiven.
a. His plea to God the Father was that the people did not know what they were doing.
b. This speaks of great compassion from the Lord Jesus Christ!

iii.
iii.
